We all love sharing our newly built Seiko mods because it’s the result of weeks, or even months of planning and sourcing, and hours of painstaking assembly. When everything has been done flawlessly, it’s very satisfying, and most of us would want to share it with our watch-loving peers as soon as we can. There’s not really a lot of mods that get shared years later, showing the longevity of the build, or the nicks and dings that it’s earned from daily use.

Here's the part nobody wants to hear while they're still in the excitement of planning a build: durability isn't something that just happens to you, and it definitely isn't one big decision you make on day one and forget about for the rest of the watch’s merry life. It's dozens of small ones, spread across three completely different stages of a mod's life. Skip a stage, or rush it because you just really want to see the finished watch already (yes, we've all been there), and the mod can still look flawless at the reveal, but it might give up in the first few years rather than living up to its full potential.

The good news is that none of this requires you to become a master watchmaker overnight. Build with a bit of intention at each of these three stages, and a Seiko mod can easily run 5 to 10 years without giving you any drama. Here’s how.

 

Buying Your Parts

Longevity starts way before the assembly. It starts with what you buy and where you buy it from, and no amount of careful assembly later on can fully make up for parts that were never built to last in the first place. Yes, you might save money buying the cheapest parts you can, and if you’re happy enough with the quality, then that’s that. But in the Seiko modding scene, the phrase “you get your money’s worth” often is worth taking to heart.

Materials are another place to start. Polished stainless steel holds up against scratching and corrosion far better than a plated case like gold or PVD, which will eventually wear through to the base metal underneath. While these colored finishes still last a long time, plain steel is still the standard, and is part of the reason why a lot of the watches that turn out to be heirlooms later on are made from it.

Titanium goes even further, more durable than steel while weighing about half as much, which matters quite a bit if you're planning to wear this thing daily for the better part of a decade. Same logic with your crystal. Sapphire shrugs off the kind of daily scuffs that would leave mineral crystal looking like a cheese grater within a year or two.

 

About Water Resistance

Water resistance rating is the one that trips people up because it's not something you’d mind on the day to day, until one day you notice moisture inside your watch. If your case is rated for 200 meters, every part contributing to that seal, caseback, crown, crystal, needs to match or beat that number. It only takes one weak link, like a crown that's technically rated lower than everything else in the build, to quietly waste the whole watch's water resistance. You won't notice this on assembly day, no. You’ll know it when your watch gets water-damaged and stops functioning.

 

Is It Within Tolerance?

Here’s one you won’t always see talked about in the modding Subreddit, and to be honest it’s not going to be an issue for most Seiko modders unless you’re somewhat of a purist or a perfectionist, but imperfect tolerances can stack and cause problems down the line. This is when two parts, both supposedly made for the same reference case, can fit together fine on paper but look or feel just slightly off when finally put together? It’s because of tolerance issues, and it’s not something you can entirely avoid with aftermarket parts. A bezel insert from one supplier and a crystal from another might both claim compatibility with your case, and they'll probably both technically fit. But "fits" and "fits correctly" are not the same thing, and the gap between them is measured in millimeters you'll never notice until much later.

In fact, even all-OEM Seiko parts can sometimes have tolerance issues between different batches, even if everything was made in the same factory! This is most apparent in the Seiko SKX013, which anyone who’s had the pleasure of modding, will tell you that parts can be very hit or miss. For us, we had to take 5 different SKX013 units and go with the average measurements of those 5 just to be able to maximize compatibility. 

None of it breaks anything immediately. But it does create low-level friction and stress that accumulates. Add it all up over a few years and you've got a watch that's been quietly working against itself the whole time.

We're not saying you need to buy every single part from one brand. But for the parts that touch or interact with each other, the case, crown, bezel, etc., there's some sense in keeping your sourcing as consistent as you can. A supplier with a track record of verified, tight tolerances across their catalog is going to save you headaches that don't even show up for two or three years, long after you've forgotten which forum poster pointed you toward that one part in the first place.

 

Assemble Slowly

Once your parts are in hand, assembly is where a lot of long-term durability gets decided, even though most of it won't show up until much later. This is the stage where patience for a few hours pays off for years, and where shortcuts save minutes but create problems that only reveal themselves once the honeymoon phase wears off.

Gasket Care

Let's talk gaskets first, because these little rubber rings do not get the respect they deserve. They're the entire barrier between your movement and the outside world, and getting their install wrong is one of the most common reasons a watch that was supposedly "built correctly" still ends up with moisture inside it. Rule one: always use fresh gaskets, even if you're reusing a case or crystal that already came with one installed. Old gaskets lose elasticity through repeated compression, harden with age, and can develop cracks so small you'd need a loupe to spot them. They might look perfectly fine sitting in your parts tray, but that doesn't mean they'll actually seal.

Sizing is just as important as freshness. If your gasket is a tad too small or narrow, there may not be enough contact area to seal properly. And if it’s too large, you’re likely to twist your gasket which can cause your crystal or bezel to tilt, or your caseback to not thread in all the way. Crystal gaskets are especially prone to this since different crystal manufacturers use slightly different profiles, so a gasket that works great with one crystal might not seal at all with another, even if they're only a millimeter or two apart. For our cases with pre-installed crystals, most use custom gaskets which means regular SKX gaskets won’t work. It’s better to spend some time now to clarify fitment and compatibility instead of getting a waterlogged movement later.

Lubrication is where people tend to overcorrect in extremes. A dry caseback gasket can roll or twist during installation, and a rolled gasket leaves a gap that water can seep into. But slather on too much grease and you get the opposite problem: the gasket slides out of position, and the excess traps dirt right against the sealing surface - something more harmful than it is helpful. What you actually want is a thin, even film, and it needs to be a lubricant made for watch gaskets specifically. Silicone grease in an applicator would be the best way to get that even coat.

The gasket care doesn’t stop there. Compression is another thing to be careful of as it can endanger your Seiko mod, mostly because it's not intuitive until someone explains it to you. Crystal gaskets need even pressure all the way around, so use a properly matched die on your press instead of forcing it in. And if you’re using a grip-style tool that tends to push harder on one side than the other, we recommend pressing it a millimeter at a time, rotating the watch before each press to make the pressure somewhat more even. Casebacks have a similar failure mode. Start the threads at an angle and you'll cross-thread it, which compresses the gasket unevenly even though everything looks totally fine from the outside. The fix for both is the same: slow down, feel for smooth and even resistance, and if something's not threading or seating the way it should, stop and figure out why instead of pushing through.

 

Other Finicky Parts

Outside of gaskets, the crown and stem are where a lot of long-term reliability quietly gets decided. The stem needs to be trimmed to the exact length for your specific case and crown combo. Settle for a stem that’s too long and you get an awkward gap between crown and case, and likely an imperfect seal. Too short and it won't engage the movement properly, which means good luck winding or setting anything. Measure twice, cut once, as they always say. If your case has crown guards, thread in the crown fully to the case without the stem first, just to make sure it goes all the way in without interference.

And hands. We know, we know, this is more about the modder than the movement, but it belongs here anyway because it's one of the fiddliest parts of any build and the easiest to rush once you're this close to the finish line. Hands set too low can rub against the dial or bump into each other during operation, while too high and they risk touching the crystal. Outside of measuring the actual distance with a caliper, you can check clearance from the sides after each hand goes on rather than waiting until they're all installed. It's a lot easier to fix one hand than to figure out which one of three is the culprit later.

One more thing while we're here: if your build includes an aftermarket rotor, check its height and make sure it sits dead flat against the movement while still rotating smoothly with no resistance. A rotor that's not seated right can get stopped by the caseback once everything's closed up, essentially turning your automatic into a manual wind movement. 

 

Your Two Main Concerns: Water and Magnetism

Even a flawless build still has to survive the real world, and in the real world, two things cause more long-term damage to watches, modded or otherwise, than everything else combined: water and magnetism. Neither one needs a dramatic event to cause a problem.

Water resistance is the bigger threat. Every Seiko that leaves the factory gets pressure tested before it's sold, but most modded watches never get that same treatment. That doesn't mean your build is doomed, but it does mean the job of verifying water resistance now falls on you instead of a quality control line. If you're building something you actually plan to swim or dive in, either pressure test it yourself with the right gear or have a watchmaker do it after assembly. If you’re not really thinking of diving with your Seiko mod, then this matters less.

The general rule to maintain your watch’s water resistance is to relubricate every 2 to 3 years for normal daily wear, and bump that up to annually if you're swimming or showering with it regularly. Any time the case gets opened, whether for a repair, a battery swap, or just curiosity, you might as well refresh lubrication on whatever gaskets you disturb along the way. Opening and closing a case stresses those seals no matter how gentle you are about it.

Magnetism is thankfully reversible in most cases, although it can be harder to diagnose because there are less visual cues. Magnets are everywhere these days; phone speakers, refrigerator doors, even some watch straps. Inside the movement, what actually happens is the hairspring, an incredibly fine coil responsible for regulating the balance wheel's swing, sticks to itself when exposed to a strong enough field. Once that happens, the watch typically starts gaining time because that shortened hairspring throws off the whole regulation. If you notice your mod suddenly gaining several minutes a day out of nowhere, rule out magnetism before you assume anything is actually broken.

Fun fact: the NH35 and NH36 movements are already built to the ISO minimum standard for dive watch magnetic resistance, so your Seiko mod is starting with a baseline of protection most people never even think about. And when magnetization does happen anyway, it's fixable in about ten seconds with a cheap demagnetizer. Genuinely one of the easiest fixes in this entire hobby, but only if you know to look for it. 

 

Maintenance Tips

The gap between a mod that lasts two years and one that lasts ten almost always comes down to maintenance habits, not the quality of the original build.

Gasket relubrication, already covered above, is going to be the main one to always remember doing. Think of it like a routine physical. Not urgent in the moment, but the small recurring investment that keeps you from a much bigger, much more expensive problem later. 

Timekeeping accuracy is one of the best and easiest diagnostic tools you already have. NH movements typically run within -20 to +40 seconds a day out of the factory, which is genuinely solid for the price point. If your watch starts drifting outside that range, you need to start looking. Sudden gains usually point straight back to magnetism, while gradual drift over months is more often a sign the movement is due for a cleaning and fresh internal lubrication, since old lubricant thickens with age and creates drag on the gear train. Don’t worry too much since this is normal wear and it's exactly what regular servicing exists to fix.

Listen to your watch too, particularly the automatic winding rotor. A healthy rotor should spin almost silently. Grinding, rattling, or clicking usually means debris or insufficient lubrication where the rotor meets the movement plate. You can clean this yourself with the right tools and a steady hand, but if you're not confident going that deep into the movement, this is a perfectly reasonable one to hand off to a watchmaker. 

Remember that maintenance isn't a sign something went wrong with your build, but a procedure that keeps a well-built watch just that. Even Rolexes will need servicing from time to time. We’re sure a personal Seiko mod that you built yourself would be something you’d want to extend the life of.

 

Wrap Up

Building a mod that lasts 5 to 10 years doesn't take perfection or a watchmaker's certification. It takes sourcing thoughtfully, building with a bit of patience in the details that won't show up for a while, and keeping a light, consistent maintenance rhythm once the watch is actually on your wrist. Get those three things reasonably right, and the watch takes care of the rest.
