Seiko Mods for Sci-Fi Fans: Making a Modern-Looking Mechanical Watch
If you love sci-fi and want a watch that looks more like Blade Runner than an Apple Watch (modern, yet still has soul), Seiko modding is a great way to make that happen. Instead of using a digital smartwatch that’s going to bother you every few minutes with notifications, you can build a mechanical watch that feels retro and futuristic at the same time without losing its functions.
The best part about Seiko mods is how much you can customize. Want a watch that looks like it belongs on a spaceship? Use a dial with bold numbers and glowing parts. Want something clean and simple, like something out of Ex Machina? Try a black-and-white build with sharp lines. And no, it doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Even a basic Seiko 5 or SKX can turn into a sci-fi watch with just a few cool upgrades.
Here are our top picks for Seiko mod parts that will turn your ordinary watch into a sci-fi-inspired timepiece.
The Most Important Piece: The Dial
Cyclic Cyborg
Not many of you will remember this, but we hope the OG modfam can still remember when we did a dial designing competition a few years back, with the Cyclic Cyborg winning as the top choice by popular vote, and rightly so. It’s got a very unique look that’s quite different from the choices at the time. The circuit board pattern, the see-through glass material (very challenging to get the manufacturing right, by the way), the generous lume - it all made for a futuristic look that would not look out of place on a smartwatch. And yet it’s perfect for old-school, mechanical Seiko mods.

Perhaps our favorite build featuring this dial is this Seiko Giugiaro-inspired watch build, which is also similar-looking to the watch worn by Sigourney Weaver in the second Aliens film. It may be a dystopian sci-fi film, but we think it makes for good inspiration nonetheless.

Another awesome example is this 7009-5200 build that just oozes with retro futuristic charm. The square case is reminiscent of Seiko’s “TV watch phase” in the 70s and the Cyclic Cyborg dial just makes it look like a watch that’s ahead of its time. Or is it actually looking like a period-correct part in this build? You decide!
Tron Dial

Here’s a piece that’s undeniably modern in its minimalism and BGW9 glow. It’s obvious which movie inspired the nickname, but we think it’s very fitting for the design. The deep black dial makes this perfect for stealthy tool watch builds, but it works just as well with a steel finish dress case. To match the look of the Tron dial, we had to create custom matching skeleton hands as well - a two hander that will blend perfectly with this dial to for a true sci-fi feel.

Turbine Dial

Lastly we have Ironmonkey369s popular Turbine dial. This one is not sci-fi looking in the traditional sense, but rather a steampunk aesthetic that’s just another interpretation of futuristic engineering with that Victorian-era blend. It’s downright mesmerizing and is perfect if you’re looking to build a watch that turns heads.
The geometric shapes in its multiple sectors mimic the blades on a jet turbine that gives it a very industrial vibe. It also uses different shades of blue but overall, it still looks cohesive.
Skeleton Dials

Terminator fan? If you like the “raw machine” look of a T800, then skeleton dials should be your cup of tea. Skeleton dials are all about showing off what’s usually hidden. Instead of covering the movement, these dials expose the inner gears and springs of the watch, letting you see it tick in real time. It’s a perfect match for sci-fi fans who love the look of machines and high-tech design.
Skeleton dials often come with bold metal tones, sharp lines, and layered textures that feel straight out of a futuristic lab. We have plenty of examples to choose from, and all will let you create something futuristic. It may look dystopian, but yep, still futuristic.
Completing the Look

While the spotlight will be on the dial, you’d still want to get the other parts right to really nail that sci-fi style. There’s not going to be any strict criteria for this, but here are some general guidelines that might help.
For the case, a black PVD or matte case will add contrast and make your dial stand out. Polished finish is preferred if you’re sticking to stainless steel though, as the sheen adds to the modern look (As Spongebob said, everything in the future is chrome).
As for the hands, you might want to choose something with heavy lume or a skeleton variant as they have a more modern look compared to your usual dive hands.

And lastly, finish it off with flat sapphire crystal with a colored AR coating (usually blue or red) for a subtle hint of color. It also enhances readability while adding a sort of holographic effect.
There’s no perfect combination, so feel free to experiment until you find something that you like!
Wrap Up
If you like your watches just a bit more modern but not exactly looking like a straight up fitbit, Seiko modding might be a good option for you. With just a few parts, you can turn a basic Seiko into something that looks like it came from the future, or at least from a really cool movie set.
