With an extra complication, GMT builds are extra prone to misalignment issues. And if on regular builds you might let the occasional marker or index not being perfectly lined up slide, it's much less forgiving for a GMT Seiko mod because the accuracy of the markers affect its functionality.

A GMT mod is really just a dual-time system built around a 24-hour hand and a matching bezel or chapter ring, and the whole point of that system is readability. If the hand, the ring, and the bezel aren't all telling the same story, the watch stops doing its job, no matter how clean the rest of the build looks. 

And here's the part that catches a lot of builders off guard: a watch can be "working" perfectly, keeping great time, running smooth, and still be misaligned. That's what we're digging into today, modfam, the small mistakes that throw off GMT alignment even on an otherwise solid build.

 

What GMT Misalignment Actually Means

In simpler terms, GMT misalignment just means the 24-hour hand isn't pointing where it should be relative to the scale that's supposed to represent your second timezone, whether that's printed on a chapter ring or a bezel insert. Say your GMT hand is pointing at 14, but your actual second timezone is really an hour or two off from that. That's misalignment. And it's rarely just one part causing the problem. The hand, the chapter ring, and the bezel all have to agree with each other, and with the dial's hour markers too. Get any one of those out of sync, and the whole system reads wrong even if every individual piece looks fine on its own.

Mistake #1: Incorrect GMT Hand Installation

This is the big one, and it usually starts before the hand ever goes on. If you install the GMT hand without first setting the movement to a known baseline, like midnight or noon, you're basically guessing at the reference point. A lot of beginners also forget to check the date change position before setting hands, which throws off the whole sequence from the start.

What you should do before installing hands (and this is best practice even for non-GMT movements like the NH35/36), is to wind the movement until the date changes before installing the hands to point at 12 o’clock. Once all hands are installed, then you can set it to the correct time.

 

Mistake #2: Misaligned Chapter Ring

Even a small rotation in the chapter ring is enough to throw off how accurate the GMT looks, even when it technically isn't wrong. This usually comes down to a loose fit, uneven adhesive, or the ring simply not seating evenly around the dial. Always dry-fit the chapter ring and check its alignment before you commit to anything permanent.

For SKX007 chapter rings with markers, there will usually be a peg that you have to file down to slot it into the notch on the case. If the trimming is not balanced, the chapter ring can sit just a tiny bit off-center, and that can already be noticeable to some people. In some cases, Seiko modders just prefer shaving off this peg completely and just relying on dial dots or 3M stickers to secure the chapter ring in place which is perfectly acceptable as long as you get the alignment right.

 

Mistake #3: Bezel Insert Not Properly Aligned

Your GMT bezel insert needs to line up precisely with the 12 o'clock marker, and it's surprisingly easy to get this slightly wrong. Sometimes the insert rotates a hair during installation. Sometimes uneven adhesive lets it shift later on. This becomes even more critical on bidirectional bezels, where there's less room for error.

The bezel insert should be one of the last few parts that you’re working on during a build, and should be installed once the movement is cased so you can use the dial as a reference point. The easiest way is to align the 12/top marker with the 12-hour marker on the dial. Keep in mind that with aftermarket parts, since they are meant to be compatible with as many parts as possible, a perfect alignment may not be achievable at all, in which case you’d just want to make sure at least that none of the markers are too severely misaligned.

And while you’re working on the bezel, do check that your click spring is properly positioned as well. Most rotating bezels will have 60 to 120 clicks, but the click spring can be wrongly positioned in such a way that it would cause the bezel insert to not land perfectly relative to its reference points. 

 

Mistake #4: Skipping Proper Movement Positioning

Understanding how your GMT movement actually behaves matters here, especially with something like the NH34. Local time needs to be set first, and only then should the GMT hand be set. Skip that order or misunderstand it, and you'll end up confusing true GMT tracking with what's really just misalignment.

 

Mistake #5: Hand Stack Interference

If the GMT hand is sitting a little too high or too low in the stack, it can drag against the hour or minute hand. That dragging can nudge the hand's position during normal operation, which means your GMT can look misaligned inconsistently, correct one moment and off the next.

Once all hands are installed, just let all the hands do a full rotation around the dial to confirm if there is interference or not.

 

Mistake #6: Dial Misalignment

Dial feet that aren't fully seated, or a dial that's rotated even slightly, will throw off the relationship between your hour markers, your bezel, and your GMT reference points. This one gets missed a lot because the dial usually looks centered at a quick glance, even when it isn't.

To avoid this, just make sure that the dial is placed snugly on the movement, and you can also use the day/date window as a reference to check for misalignment. If your dial does not feature a day/date window, you may have to encase the movement temporarily to check alignment and make adjustments if necessary.

 

Wrap Up

Here are a few extra tips: keep Rodico and a magnifier on hand for precision work. Dry-fit everything before adhesive ever enters the picture. Work under good lighting so micro misalignments actually show up instead of hiding in shadow, and take photos as you check your alignment along the way, since a photo will often catch something your eye glosses over in the moment.

Don’t stress too much if you do encounter issues. Even modders who've been at this for years still run into alignment issues from time to time. It's just part of the craft, and getting it right later just makes it more satisfying.
